On January 7, the 81st Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place in Beverly Hills, California. It streamed on various television platforms and channels such as CBS and Paramount+. Hosted by well-known comedian Jo Koy, this event brought together more than nine million spectators.

What are the “Golden Globes,” and what is its purpose? The Golden Globe Awards ceremony is an event that honors American and international television and film through nominations and awards. A non-profit organization named the Golden Globes Foundation consists of journalists and other media specialists from all across the world who vote on the winner of each award category. The Golden Globes are considered among the most anticipated and significant prize ceremonies nationwide and internationally. These awards are essential to celebrate the creation of well-established films and to admire the skills of actors and actresses.

In December of 2023, nominations were announced for the 2024 Golden Globes event. The movie Barbie was nominated in nine categories, which was the most nominations of any film. Oppenheimer received nominations in eight categories. Since both of these films were released on the same day, they became increasingly popular through the “Barbenheimer” effect. Other movies, such as Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, and Past Lives were nominated numerous times. As for television, the comedy-drama series Succession obtained nine nominations, the most for a TV series. Other series such as The Bear, Only Murders in the Building, and The Crown received multiple nominations.

In film, categories included “Best Motion Picture,” “Best Director,” “Best Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture,” “Best Screening,” and many others. Science fantasy black comedy movie Poor Things won “Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy” while Japanese fantasy film The Boy and the Heron won “Best Motion Picture - Animated.” Oppenheimer actors Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. collected prizes, and Christopher Nolan won director of the year. Popular American singer Billie Eilish won the award for “Best Original Song,” for her piece “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie. Oppenheimer won the most Golden Globes taking home five prizes, while other movies such as Barbie, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, and Poor Things also successfully won marks of recognition.

In television, broader categories included “Best Television Series,” “Best Performance in a Television Series,” “Best Supporting Performance,” and multiple others. Series such as Succession, The Bear, and Beef won many Golden Globes. Actors and actresses such as Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edibiri, Steven Yuen, Ali Wong, and Matthew Macfayden all received prizes. English comedian and actor Ricky Gervais also received a trophy for “Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.” Succession collected the most awards, with four winners from the film in various categories. Beef and The Bear were also winners of the night, each series securing three prizes.

This important celebration recognized numerous actors, actresses, films, television series, and other achievements. The Oscars, another significant celebration of film and TV, will be hosted on March 10. Save the date!
