Chandler Bowl 2017 Recap

After having regained the title in 2016, the Concord Academy community celebrated in Pingree’s gymnasium and playing fields after successfully defending this year’s Chandler Bowl.

CA won the Chandler Bowl by winning 5 out of the 9 games on Friday, October 20th. Boy’s varsity and JV soccer, Girls varsity and JV soccer, field hockey, cross country, and varsity and JV volleyball competed with their Pingree opponents. By mid-afternoon the overall score was tied 4-4 with the determining game coming down to Girls Varsity Volleyball.

With the other games concluded, CA supporters trickled into the bleachers of the Pingree gym to watch the volleyball game. As fans’ cheers echoed around the gym, the volleyball game carried over to the final and deciding 5th set, with a 2-2 tie. Winning that close set, CA volleyball secured this year’s Chandler Bowl.

When reflecting on this year’s competition, Director of Athletics Sue Johnson noted that for her, the most memorable moment of this year’s competition was “when the stands emptied after the volleyball team won a thrilling 5 set match securing the bowl for CA.”

Family, friends, and students traveled alongside the athletes to watch nine teams compete on October 20th. Fans brought along posters and even green and white pom-poms to cheer on the competing athletes. Johnson said that everyone participated with “true team effort” and school spirit, and was glad that CA kept the Chandler Bowl for another year.
