The 2022 boys tennis team is shaping up to be one of the best in years. 33 players tried out for the team this spring, including nearly a dozen freshmen, leading to one of the deepest talent pools in a long time. With only three former varsity players not returning this season, the collective skill of the program could only grow. A handful of players who were remote last year returned to the team, along with many new players. This is a promising outlook for a team that is consistently among Concord Academy’s best.
Daniel Xu ’25, in his first year on varsity tennis, praised the team, “We have a great team this year—a good blend of talent, experience, and leadership.” Daniel went on to say, “[The team is] really excited to compete to our best this year.”
Zach Miller ’24, a top player on the junior varsity team, is excited about the opportunity to be at the top of the team, saying, “I’m looking forward to playing singles and playing matches that count.”
JV coach Martha Soper, who has been coaching the team for eight years, is also impressed with this year’s talent. She explained it concisely, “This team is the best tennis team I’ve coached at CA.”
After a season shortened by COVID-19, the 2022 season features a densely packed schedule. Each team will play ten times; varsity is scheduled to play five home games and five away games over six weeks, while JV has six home and four away over seven weeks. The varsity team has had four consecutive wins against Dexter School, Portsmouth Abbey School, Pingree School, and Cushing Academy after a close 3-4 loss to Middlesex. Cheer on Boys Varsity Tennis at their home game against Bancroft today and Boys JV Tennis at their next home game against Pingree next Wednesday, May 4!
