Minionese, or more commonly-known as the Banana Language, is a fictional language adopted by the directors of the Despicable Me movie series, Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud. This polyglot-based language borrows words, phrases, and grammar rules from other languages, primarily from English, French, Spanish, and Italian.
But why exactly was this gibberish language created? Coffin and Renaud specifically wanted to incorporate comedic aesthetics into their movies through such exaggerations and expressive language. Additionally, the Minionese language allows for everyone around the world, particularly younger children, to understand their funny expressions and identities based on this uniquely inflated and emotive language.
On the other hand, most fictional languages are used for more mysterious, authentic reasons to contribute to their fantasy-like themes. For instance, the Elvish language from the Lord of the Rings is very detailed and constructive, and plays a role added to the complex, mythical world of Middle-earth. Furthermore, Harry Potter and Star Trek use their languages, Parseltongue and Klingon respectively, for similar purposes, for more authenticity to the fantasy world.
Minionese, similarly to few other gibberish-related languages, such as Simlish from the popular simulation game, the Sims, uses a unique way to grab the attention of their audience and add tones of humor. With the creation of such language, the creators were able to allow the audience to have an emotional connection with the minions, finding them funny or clumsy.
