The past winter season proved to be an exceptional one for the girls squash team, marked by remarkable victories and memorable experiences. The team’s success was encapsulated by a big win in its first game of the season against Portsmouth Abbey. Early in the match, hopes were low. However, after many close and challenging games, the team won 5-2.
Additionally, the team participated in the NEPSAC tournament and they were positioned in Division D as the fourth seed, but they exceeded all expectations. They swiftly defeated the third seed and won second place in the tournament. These achievements were a testament to the unwavering dedication and hard work exhibited by every member of the team during practice sessions.
For practices, athletes usually focused on one shot for an entire week and did many drills and games to practice that shot. They also did fitness exercises at the end of each practice. During each practice, laughter and camaraderie would fill the air. Reflecting on her experience, Loanne Kim ’27 recalled, “My favorite aspect of practice was undoubtedly the short games and the fitness exercise involving cards.” Despite the diverse skill levels within the team, ranging from seasoned players to newcomers, every individual underwent remarkable progress throughout the season, a testament to the group’s collective dedication and unwavering commitment to improvement.
The squash season was also marked by many fun events. For example, the girls team did a Valentine’s Day gift exchange with the boys team, a Secret Santa, a hike, and had a team dinner. Another member of the squash team, Elyn Tao ’27, said, “My favorite event that we did outside the squash courts is team dinner. The food was good. I really missed eating Asian cuisine so I really appreciated how thoughtful the parents were in choosing cuisine.” Parents of athletes ordered a variety of food for the dinner including Thai food, Chinese dishes, tanghulu, and boba. After the delicious meal, the team also watched a slideshow full of pictures taken throughout the season, which brought many happy memories back.
Personally, I would say a highlight for me was the NEPSAC tournament. Even though it was a competition, we had so much fun. I miss the car rides, Starbucks run, fancy dinner, and living in a hotel with seven other teammates. After the tournament, the team got even closer.
Lastly, thanks to the coaches, Nick Johnson and Sandy Nash, for planning everything and making it such a fun season for everyone. The team looks forward to the next winter season and more laughter-filled moments.
