The Grammys have just passed, and while the festival mainly celebrates the musicality of talented individuals, the fashion doesn’t miss either. This year's red carpet looks had everything from archived couture to modern reinventions to newly contemporary pieces. Curious about what CA students thought of these outfits, I asked three students around campus to comment on their favorite piece of the night.
Olivia Shue ’27 shared that her favorite outfit of the night was from the ‘Short n’ Sweet’ singer Sabrina Carpenter. Adorned in a baby blue, custom, floor-length gown by JW Anderson, Carpenter emitted an atmosphere of classic Hollywood elegance. Fluffy feathers of the same hue embellished the ridges of her backside and train, leaving Carpenter looking light and like a sparrow nesting on a lake of red. Her stylist, Jared Ellner, attached a statement piece with a 50-carat D-Flawless brilliant-cut diamond that hung from the back of her silky halter top from Chopard's Garden of Kalahari Collection. The sleek, minimalistic design of the dress allowed the gorgeous diamond to dominate, adding an extra touch of luxury. Carpenter had a hairdo strongly reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe’s signature style, yet still modern when paired with her blush-heavy makeup, highlighting her soft features. Overall, her look blended the vintage charm of pearls and silk with contemporary changes like feathers and a low backless cut, proving that the classics never go out of style.
Corrine Chen ’27 shared her opinion on Olivia Rodrigo’s vintage Versace dress. Known for her emotional songs and darker themes, Rodrigo’s music was perfectly encapsulated by this dress. The simplistic, sophisticated black halter dress featured many cutouts, including two on the side that revealed her abs. The dress also had a plunging neckline, exuding a sensual yet dignified aura to Rodrigo. She completed her outfit with minimal accessories, burgundy nails, and a sleek, wavy hairstyle, letting the dress speak for itself. Her bold yet structured dress paired with the sharp makeup was a perfect balance of edginess and grace, making this dress one of the night's standout looks.
Finally, I asked Birdie Ratana-Ungkool ’27 about this year’s Grammys fashion; his look of choice was Gracie Abrams’ romantic Chanel gown. Abrams went for an ethereal bridal look, wearing a butter chiffon Chanel dress with a sheer, hooded veil. The dress had many statement details, such as its black velvet belt and a satin flower at the bust. This combination of fabrics and classic Chanel features created an air of effortless elegance that felt timeless yet also contemporary. Though some may argue that the black belt ruins the delicateness of the look, it perfectly matches her black swan-esque short hair and smoky makeup. This contrast between her makeup's dark sharpness and her dress's soft glow creates an illusion of a dance between a white and black swan. Abrams finishes her look with earrings and an 18-carat white gold and diamond ring from the brand’s high jewelry collection, paired with another ring from its Coco Crush collection.
In conclusion, the Grammys 2025 red carpet was a celebration of diverse styles. These three looks all feature very different designers, jewelry, and hairstyles which reflect the stylistic variety between musical artists, even within the same genre. As trends continue to evolve, I’m excited to see next year’s Grammys and how the fashion industry styles the red carpet!
